Writing a Business Plan

If you’re starting your own business, writing a business plan is essential to your success. It can be used to help get investors to invest in your business and can give your business a focus. Before sitting down to write your plan, you may have a vague idea of what you want to achieve and how you want to do it, but writing down the plan will force you to really solidify what you’re going to do and how you’re going to do it.

Where to Start

The first thing you’ll want to do is understand how a business plan is organized. There are nine main sections:

  • Business Plan Executive Summary
  • Market Analysis
  • Company Description
  • Organization & Management
  • Marketing & Sales Management
  • Service or Product Line
  • Funding Request
  • Financials
  • Appendix

Each section has a specific purpose and for professional investors, they will expect the information in each section to be thorough and clear. Unless they can see how the business will make a profit, and therefore make them money, they won’t be willing to give you money.

Making Your Company Stand Out

As your writing your business plan, you’ll want to consider ways that your company will be different than other companies that you’ll be competing with. Some companies focus on getting you the best prices (such as Wal-Mart) while other companies focus more on customer service (such as Target). How will your company stand out? Deciding on your niche will help you solidify how your company will be successful.

Professional Editing

If you plan on presenting your business plan to investors, consider having a professional business editor look over your plan so it looks professional.
